Glasstech’s roots started in 1963 with Nelson Fernandez Sr. becoming one of the original employees at the Iconic Boat Builder, Richard Bertram Inc. His first job at the company was as a lamination worker, and by 1980 he had worked his way up to “Vice President of Production and Manufacturing”. In 1986 he resigned from Bertram Yachts, and he and his son, Nelson Fernandez Jr, opened up Glasstech Corp. In 1990, Glasstech moved to its current location on the Tamiami Canal where they did repairs and refits.
Glasstech designed, engineered and constructed from the keel up their first new build in 1999. Since then, Glasstech has constructed eleven new builds, including their largest vessel ever, the 92’ Expedition Vessel "Northstar" which was delivered in August 2016, and a 77’ high speed charter vessel with tow capability and top speeds of over 40 knots in early 2018. Currently, Glasstech can handle vessels up to 100 tons and 20’ beam for out of the water projects for both the commercial and yacht markets. Glasstech's work capabilities go from steel to aluminum, fiberglass to wood and from complex mold making to one off interior design. Historically, the largest vessel that Glasstech could work on in the water was limited to vessels with 7’ draft or less. However, in late 2017 with the completion of the dredging portion of the Tamiami Canal Dredging and Bridge Project, Glasstech can now accommodate boats for in water repairs and service of up to 215’ and up to a 12’ draft. Glasstech maintains a full time, diversified work force of 35 employees, which an average length of time and experience in senior management of over 20 years. Additionally, Glasstech also utilizes many subcontractor groups for various services.
